Our Story

Where It All Started...

Shelby Joe received his high school diploma from Shelby Senior High School. He eventually received his associate degree from North Central State College in Electrical Engineering and also furthered his education at The University of Akron while working at LUK in Wooster, Ohio as a part of their Electrical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program. Shelby Joe worked hard going to college, working full time, while also being a wonderful Christian, Husband, Dad, Friend, Coach, and Grandpa.
Shelby Joe faithfully attended Bethel Baptist Church in Savannah, Ohio.

Shelby Joe and Pastor John Bouquet were Friends beyond attending Church on Sundays. Shelby Joe worked full-time while going to College, he helped many Patients by delivering medical equipment to their homes. He worked during the day, attended night classes at NCSC, and was on-call to deliver medical equipment in the evenings and through the night for Hospice Patients. A very rewarding job, helping Others. Shelby Joe's favorite job was working at Ohio Edison, now known as First Energy, where he enjoyed his job and used his degree! He wished that he would have fully pursued his education immediately following high school so that he would have received his degree sooner. He attended College right after high school, quit, and went back to College as an Adult.

Shelby Joe married Brenda Lee Lawson (Huff), the love of his lifetime!!! Brenda Lee is a graduate of Mapleton High School!!! Shelby Joe moved to Mountie Country where he became very involved in coaching. Over the years he Coached football, basketball, and baseball. He would help in any way needed, from working for the Athletic Boosters, working the concession stand, raising money, and painting lines on the field. Shelby Joe chaperoned many trips over the years for football, track, basketball, and baseball camps and also Coached for the Nova Little League Summer baseball teams. They brought home Championship trophies too!!!

Shelby Joe and Brenda Lee were together for 25 loving years and are blessed with Sons, Daughters-in-hearts and Grand Babies. Brice Jordan Huff and Bryor Logan Huff, who both graduated from Mapleton High School. Both Boys were chosen as MVPs of the Mountie baseball team during their respective Senior years. Brice Jordan Huff’s photo is on the Wall of Fame for All-Ohio Special Mention!!! Bryor Logan Huff's photo is displayed in the Mapleton Elementary Showcase with the Mapleton Mountie Undefeated Champions Football Team AYFL 2004!!!

Shelby Joe and Brenda Lee not only loved watching their Sons play sports at Mapleton but also enjoyed watching all of their Family and Friends play as well. They raised many Boys at their home; most days you could find a dozen Boys, Friends, Nephews, and Cousins at their homes. All the Boys that spent the night on Saturday, attended Church at Bethel Baptist with them on Sundays too. Shelby Joes Sloppy Joe Sauce was created during these years of feeding many Boys at their homes. Many Family and Friends helped with the actual Shelby Joes taste-testing and production over the years. Shelby Joes Sloppy Joe Sauce started with “one can and God’s amazing, faith-filled plan.”

It was initially created to feed all the Boys, Family, and Friends and for all of the Fans in the stands at baseball games. The Shelby Joes Sloppy Joe Sauce was used to make the best sandwiches and coneys. Shelby Joe and Brenda Lee's Nephew, David Michael came up with the "Shelby Joes" name by always calling the Sloppy Joe sandwiches, "Shelby Joes." The sauce comes in three flavors: Original, Sweet, and Hot, and is presently sold in many local stores and in many States where Walnut Creek Foods are sold.

Shelby Joe would often say, “If you leave here hungry, it’s your own fault.” The Sweet recipe was requested by Bryor Logan and is a Family favorite at the baseball games. Family members in the stand requested that we put Shelby Joes in a jar so that they may make Shelby Joes Sloppy Joe Sauce at home!!! Shelby Joe loved the Sweet flavor on his coneys and Brenda Lee's favorite was the Original flavor on a delicious taco pile-up. Be sure to support local and shop your favorite Shelby Joe Sauce.
